Miami Begins Using New Mosquito Trap In Zika Control Efforts
As Miami-Dade mosquito inspectors continue to spray the Zika infested areas of Wynwood, Miami Police also lent a hand on Tuesday, passing out mosquito spray to homeless people in the area. Only now, the adversary is an insidious, exotic species. The Aedes aegypti, unlike Florida’s native mosquitoes that inhabit coastal mangroves and swampy marshes, is an urban mosquito, proficient at hiding in our midst, feeding on our blood and spreading disease like a dirty needle. The more people, the better.
Now, Miami is starting to use a new technology for reducing mosquito populations that was recently approved by the Environmental Protection Agency for emergency use in areas where there is Zika. It’s a type of trap that attracts females and contaminates them with a larvicide they then spread to other breeding sites.
The battle to stop the spread of Zika is leading to new technologies for controlling the mosquitoes that carry it. Some involve releasing genetically modified mosquitoes into the wild, controversial measures that have been met with public resistance.
But there is another new technology now in use in Florida. It’s a trap recently approved by the EPA. It kills mosquitoes by eliminating their breeding sites. From Miami, here’s NPR’s Greg Allen.

Allen mentioned that it’s the kind of container that female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes love. That’s the species of mosquito that carries Zika, dengue and other tropical diseases. Aedes aegypti females like to lay their eggs in man-made containers. They prefer dark places.
