Mosquitoes can spread so many diseases.
- Japanese B Virus Infection
Infection is caused by a flavivirus, a single stranded RNA virus. It is transmitted by the bite of the Culex tritaeniorhynchus mosquito. The virus multiplies at the site of the bite and in regional lymph nodes before viraemia develops. Viraemia can lead to inflammatory changes in the heart, lungs, liver, and reticuloendothelial system. Dr.T.V. Rao MD 10 Japanese B virus Infection. Japanese Encephalitis is a zoonotic disease – the reservoir of infection (primary hosts, reservoir hosts) make pigs and wild birds (especially herons and other wading birds), more rarely, horses, reptiles and bats. The carrier (vector) are mosquitoes of the genus Culex and possibly others. The most important include Culex tritaeniorhynchus (rice field mosquito) and C. vishnui.
Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease affecting humans and other animals caused by parasitic protozoans (a group of single-celled microorganisms) belonging to the Plasmodium type. Malaria causes symptoms that typically include fever, fatigue, vomiting, and headaches. In severe cases it can cause yellow skin, seizures, coma, or death. Symptoms usually begin ten to fifteen days after being bitten. If not properly treated, people may have recurrences of the disease months later. In 2013 there are 97 countries and territories with on going malaria transmission and 6 countries in the prevention of reintroduction phase making a total of 103 countries and territories in which malaria is presently considered endemic. Globally an estimated 3.4 billion people are at risk of malaria. WHO estimates that 207 million cases of malaria occurred globally in 2012(uncertainty range 135?287 million) and 627 000 deaths (uncertaintyrange 473 000?789 000). Most cases (80%) and deaths (90%) occurred in Africa andmost deaths (77%) were in children under 5 years of age.
- Dengue Fever
Dengue fever is a painful, debilitating mosquito-borne disease caused by any one of four closely related dengue viruses. These viruses are related to the viruses that cause West Nile infection and yellow fever.
An estimated 390 million dengue infections occur worldwide each year, with about 96 million resulting in illness. Most cases occur in tropical areas of the world, with the greatest risk occurring in:
- The Indian subcontinent
- Southeast Asia
- Southern China
- The Pacific Islands
- The Caribbean (except Cuba and the Cayman Islands)
- Central and South America (except Chile, Paraguay, and Argentina)
- Zika Virus
Zika is spread mostly by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito (Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus). These mosquitoes bite during the day and night. Zika can be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus. Infection during pregnancy can cause certain birth defects. The virus causes birth defects in babies born to some infected pregnant women, including microcephaly, where babies are born with underdeveloped heads and brain damage. Zika has also been linked to Guillain-Barre syndrome, a condition in which the immune system attacks the nerves. It’s mainly spread through mosquitoes, although some cases of sexual transmission have been reported.
