Small Bite, Big Problem
One Bite Turning into Many Complications
Everyone has experienced a bite from an insect before. Bug bites are basically a part of life and most of us forget that little bite after a few minutes. In most cases it won’t have too many complications though for some people it might be a bit more complicated. Not everyone recovers as fast from bug bites and some bug bites like those from mosquitoes might bring more consequences than most people might expect. Mosquitoes unlike other bugs draw blood out of the human body to nourish their eggs. While most mosquito bites will cause a small irritating bump there are some bites that can bigger complications for certain people.
How complicated can a bite be?
There are some people that are allergic to mosquito bites, for example people that have a weaker immune system like young children or elderly folks. When a mosquito bites someone with a weaker or disorderly immune system the effects can be more than just a small red bump. There are a few warning signs that could mean you are allergic to mosquito bites.
- A large area of itching and/or swelling that extends beyond a small red bump
- Bruising around the bite
- Swollen lymph nodes around your neck
- Outbreak of hives around the bite
- Presence of (skin) lesions around the bite
- Swelling of the throat, wheezing and shortness of breath, which may indicate the presence of a potentially critical condition known as anaphylaxis
- Please do seek medical attention when these signs appear (especially anaphylaxis)
Testing Mosquito Bite Allergies
Most doctors can perform a simple skin test to determine if you have any allergy to mosquito bites. A mosquito allergy is a good way to test if u had a bad reaction from insect bites in the past. However, an allergy test might not be foolproof since there are different kinds of species of mosquitoes that all have their own unique kind of saliva that might cause an allergic reaction. It is possible that you are allergic to one type and immune to other type of saliva from a different species of the mosquito.
Mosquito Bite Infection
Sounds weird but it is possible that a mosquito bite can become infected especially for your children or pets. Some people might accidentally scratch a mosquito bite open or children that keep scratching the mosquito bite. Once the mosquito bite is scratched open it allows for bacteria to enter the wound. Take for an example when children, they usually scratch open the mosquito bite and go outside to play, there is a possible chance that they might get infected by Tetanus (Lockjaw) and cause muscle spasms.
Tetanus is caused by an infection with the bacterium Clostridium Tetani, which is commonly found in soil, saliva, dust, and manure. The bacteria generally enter through a break in the skin such as a cut or puncture wound by a contaminated object. They produce toxins that interfere with muscle contractions, resulting in the typical symptoms. Diagnosis is based on the presenting signs and symptoms. The disease does not spread between people
Prevention against Mosquito or Bug Bites
You can reduce your chance of being bitten by mosquitoes or other insects by wearing light colored clothing, Applying DEET might repel some mosquitoes but there is a chance that some are immune to it. Another good way to prevent mosquito bites is by placing a MBOX or other Anti-mosquito products of QM to reduce the mosquito population near your home and in your backyard.
